Often called white tape, thread seal tape or plumbers tape, PTFE tape is used for sealing threaded plumbing connections.

Example of PTFE tape being applied to male thread

Normally you use 3 to 4 turns of tape, starting from the end and in the same direction as the threads.

PTFE stands for "Polytetrafluoroethylene", a product accidentally discovered in 1938 by Roy Plunkett, a DuPont scientist, in New Jersey.
